new jersey devils load a crap. well, obviously not a complete load a crap, since they won. i talked to david about hockey earlier, and as i suspected, he's hoping the devils win. not because he likes the devils, but because he hates the avs. speaking of david, i don't know where he's disappeared to. he said he was planning on watching hockey and then possibly going out. he was supposed to call if he went out. i called him at some point during second period, but he wasn't home. i don't know that he left for the night, as i didn't ask. it's quite possible that he just went to the store or something. regardless, he wasn't there and he hasn't called, either, so who knows. talked to ralph sometime during the third period. he said he watched the first period. ralph watched hockey on his own accord. wow. anyway, he spent most of the day cleaning his new apartment and moving his stuff. he hadn't eaten anything all day so was going to go do that. he's supposed to call back and let me know if he still feels like going out at all. i would imagine not, as it's already pretty late. either way doesn't really matter to me. if either david or ralph is up for being social, i'll join, but i'm also ok with just hanging out here again. david called last night and asked if i wanted to meet him, rich & jason up at cecil's, but i'd rented movies and was pretty intent on just hanging out & watching them. so that's what i did with my evening last night. i rented requiem for a dream, which i'd seen in the theater, and traffic, which i hadn't seen at all. stupid hollywood video. i really should have known better, but all they have is the 'edited' version of requiem for a dream. bollocks to that. no special features for me! argh. i'd rented it with the intention of inviting my mother to watch it, and i know her well enough to know that she'd probably survive an 'edited' version better anyway. having only seen it once before i can't be sure of what exactly was edited. i don't think the sex scene near the end of the film was as explicit as i remember. i could refer to the fact that i've seen it before so perhaps a bit of the 'shock' value is gone. i doubt it, however, as i don't think it could ever be completely diluted no matter how many times i've seen it. it wasn't pretty and that was the point. i'd be willing to bet that sex scene probably bothered the MPAA more than anything else. i'll just say this. my mother is a pretty average adult american movie-goer. she'd already turned away before they even got to the sex scene. it's not as if everything is roses until they drop the sex bomb on you. so then i watched traffic. second movie about drugs in one night, although each has a different story to tell. requiem for a dream focuses on addiction while traffic focuses on america's so-called 'war on drugs' with addiction present as sort of a sub-plot. i didn't think traffic completely sucked, so i don't really want to come off as if i'm bashing it. i might have appreciated it more if i'd viewed it at a different time. it's definitely more of a 'hollywood' film. i struggled with the feeling that the importance of the subject matter being explored weighed in just as heavy as the importance of the film being accessible entertainment. at the end of the film, i think you were supposed to feel optimisitic. ?? i felt discouraged, but maybe that's just my bitterness. ok, i just realized i could write a novel with all that's in my head, but i don't really want to. i started going on and on and it was so convoluted i just gave up and deleted it. suffice to say that i think requiem for a dream is a much better film. i guess i'll have to buy the unrated version if i want to see it again and watch the extra stuff on the dvd. somewhere during this writing ralph called and so i wasted at least an hour on the phone yapping about who knows what. man, can i do some talking.
