odd bird sighting

right now there are several (well, at least 2 - i've seen 2) birds wandering around my block. they look like herons of some sort, but of course i have no idea what they are. i found the picture below of a yellow-crowned night heron.  i'm pretty sure these birds outside right now are not this species, but of all the photos i looked at, the one below most resembled them.
they are quite large. i noticed the birds when i was making a trip to the convenience store a little while ago. as i was driving down the street, i caught a glimpse of something to my left, so i slowed down 'cause i thought it was a dog or something ... but no, it's this HUGE bird. this guy is at least two feet tall.
so for the past half hour or so, i've been outside looking at them (or trying to, at least), or inside looking at photos online trying to figure out what they are. it's really quite bizarre. i've never seen a bird even close to this size anywhere near here. i don't by any means live 'out' of the city. there's a highway at one end of my street. it's pretty metropolitan around here. i think these birds are lost, or confused, or something. there's some traffic cones down the street and one of these birds keeps hanging around that area. perhaps he thinks they're birds, too? there's another one down the street in the other direction - maybe they're lost from each other? i don't know why they're here or what they're doing here, but i'm enjoying watching them because it's completely abnormal.
i'm going to go now & watch them some more - unless they have now left.
